Summertime Blog-Final Update for 2013-2014 School Year

Scout Families,

First, thank you for an incredible nine months. The skills and talents demonstrated by many of you, in addition to your commitment, have made our Pack tremendously diverse and effective at Scouting. Due to your efforts my job as Cub Master is more than sustainable-it is enjoyable and educational. Looking ahead, we have two major events planned for our summer and my hope is you will continue to bring to bear those abilities, talents and skills as we camp, swim, hike and fish with our Cubs.

Here are the details regarding our summer plans. *Each activity requires; an adult or guardian, attendance to a Safety Meeting and a current Medical History form. I will issue you a Packing List at the required Safety meeting and collect your Medical History forms. Please insure I have your current email so this form and other communications can be issued to you in a timely manner.

June 14th-15, 2014 Bottomless Lakes, Roswell, NM

Bottomless Lakes State Park is quite a gem in the desert. Multiple Lakes exist, only one is available for swimming: Lea. Paddle Boards and Paddle Boats are available (for rent at your own cost) as are life jackets which are mandatory. Lea Lake is spring fed, provided to us by snow melt, which travels from the mountains, down into the aquifer and bubbles up for our enjoyment. The water is very clean and many turtles and fish reside. No fishing is allowed in Lea but is allowed nearby. Showers and restrooms are provided. The Day Use area is very busy, but my plan is to spend our days on the other two sides of the Lake so we may rope off a designated Non-Swimmer area. Bring shade if you have it! All our Cubs are considered Non-Swimmers until tested. Please Google Bottomless Lakes for a complete description. We will caravan from our charter organization/normal meeting location. Departure will be at 0830 on June 14th. Camp will Breakdown at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, June 15th. You may leave at anytime following Camp Breakdown. Pack funds and hands will be used to make dinner-menu TBD based upon fire restrictions. Each family will be asked to bring one item for a Pack breakfast. Your family will be responsible for all other food and drinks you may require. Joe, The State Park Ranger, has kindly waived our fee provided we pick up litter before Camp Breakdown on Sunday. RSVP due by May 30th, Safety Meeting to be held on Thursday, June 5th at 5 p.m. at Sacred Grounds.

August 2nd-3rd, 2014 Camp Wehinahpay, Cloudcroft, NM

Eric attended Wehinahpay as I believe did Mr. Mize. I have never been but believe it will be a wonderful camping opportunity. We chose August for a number of reasons, one being the weather, another being the actual availability of the Camp to Cubs rather than Boys. The pool will be closed so plan for hiking and fishing instead. Restrooms and a dining area are provided. We will once again caravan from our normal meeting location departing at 0830 on August 2nd. Camp will Breakdown at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, August 3rd. You will be required to leave at this time as this is the allotted time the Pack has paid for to date. Again, Pack funds and hands will be used to make dinner-menu TBD. Each family will be asked to bring one item for a Pack breakfast. Your family will be responsible for all other food and drinks you may require. RSVP due July 19th, Safety Meeting to be held on Thursday, July 24th at 5 p.m. at Sacred Grounds.

Again, I will need your email addresses to keep you abreast of our planning for both events. Mine is anessa.collins@gmail.com.
